Food companies pledge to avoid GM beet sugar

Over 70 companies have vowed not to use or sell genetically modified beet sugar by signing a registry set up by food safety, environmental and corporate watchdog organizations on Saturday.

The first GM sugar beet crops – which were Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beets – were harvested in the fall, but signatories of the Non-Genetically Modified (GM) Beet Sugar Registry have said they are worried about a lack of knowledge about the long-term health and environmental impacts of GM beet sugar. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) added that one of the reasons for creating the registry is to give consumers a choice about whether they eat foods containing GM sugar in the absence of mandatory labeling for GM foods. < /span>

Jeffrey Smith, director of the Institute for Responsible Technology – one of a dozen sponsors of the registry – said: “We need to avoid the all-too-common situation of finding out a product is harmful after it has been approved and widely distributed. Requiring that GM foods be labeled is the only protection consumers have if they want to avoid eating GM foods.”

CFS asserted that the US Environmental Protection Agency increased allowable levels of herbicide residue on GM sugar beet roots “at the request of Monsanto.”

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready sugar beets are modified so that the crop is resistant to the company’s Roundup-brand herbicide, allowing farmers to quickly kill weeds without killing the crop.

No one from Monsanto was available to comment prior to publication.

Contamination concerns

CFS has also said that the recent mercury contamination of high fructose corn syrup has made companies particularly nervous about the introduction of unlabeled GM beet sugar to the US food supply.

It said: “The registry shows the food industry’s increasing apprehension about the government’s ability to adequately regulate food production technologies.”

Tom Stearns, president of High Mowing Organic Seeds, which has also sponsored the registry, expressed concern that GM sugar beets would cross-pollinate with related crops such as chard and table beets, meaning that the issue could affect other foods and food ingredients.

“Overseas markets have already rejected other GM products, so the economic future of many of our nation’s farmers is being needlessly risked,” he said.

The registry has been signed by 73 grocery chains and food producers so far, documenting a pledge to “seek wherever possible to avoid using GM beet sugar in our products” and urging the sugar beet industry to avoid using GM beets.

Map: Forage Plants for Honey Bees

HoneyBeeNet is one of the more surprising finds on the NASA website. There you’ll find a Honey Bee Forage Map showing the 14 regions of the Ayers and Harman honey bee forage map, “based on natural patterns of land use and flora.”

Click on the map to see a list of honey bee forage species and their blooming periods for any region within a state. bee forage plants map

Although the text says “state” on all pages (e.g. “state of NB” for New Brunswick’s listing), this resource really does give plant information for our provinces — forage plant species and blooming periods.

The large pink area of the map that covers the northern boreal region of Canada has no species listed at present, but clicking on other areas of the map will take you to a list of honey bee forage plants for that area. The most important nectar sources for honey bees are highlighted. Here in the Maritimes, however, where the bee season is rather short, the earlier blooming species (such as maple, alder, dandelion, and willow) are important as sources of pollen as well as nectar. Pollen sources are needed for brood production to help the bee colonies build back up to strength after wintering over.

Food counterfeiting, contamination outpace international regulatory systems

Michigan State University analysts find growing threat




CHICAGO — Intentionally contaminated Chinese milk killed several children and sickened 300,000 more, causing concern around an increasingly connected world economy. Demand for inexpensive products virtually guarantees future repeats of food adulteration and counterfeiting from overseas, Michigan State University researchers said, as trade volumes overwhelm regulatory oversight.

Nobody can guarantee safe food, said Ewen Todd, but governments need to improve controls by promoting increased corporate responsibility, identifying vulnerabilities and assessing risks. Todd, a professor of advertising, public relations and retailing, conducted a symposium on the safety of imported food today at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting held in Chicago.

Increasing risk-based inspections and sampling; improving the detection of food system signals that indicate contamination; improving immediate response to contamination events; and improving risk communication all should be part of a more stringent regimen, Todd said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspects less than 2 percent of the food coming into the country, while 13 percent of America's food is imported, Todd said.

"It's a worldwide trend. First of all, transportation is easier, trade is easier," he said, while consumers are increasingly well traveled and have higher expectations. "We want stuff in the winter when we can't grow it."

Between the extremes of accidentally contaminated food and terrorism via intentional contamination lies the counterfeiter, seeking not to harm but to hide the act for profit. The melamine incidents are such examples. As an industrial chemical that mimics protein content in tests was added to milk and subsequently created kidney problems for children.

Product counterfeiting is the focus of a presentation by John Spink, an instructor at the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center and director of the Packaging for Food and Product Protection (P-FAPP) initiative, both at MSU. He is developing a criminal justice program focused on food counterfeiting."We take a risk-based approach to analyze where the gaps are and look closer at where there is a higher reward for fraud," he said. "Counterfeiting goes back to Roman times, when French wine had a seal of Roman origin," he said. "Products are moving around the world so fast now that there's more opportunity for fraud. When food was di stributed more regionally, there was less potential for large-scale fraud, or outbreaks of any kind."

Recent instances of counterfeiting or contamination include conventionally grown vegetables sold as organic; fish sold as a more premium species; milk and pet food adulterated with melamine; catfish (and honey) containing banned antibiotics; toothpaste contaminated with diethylene glycol (a base chemical in antifreeze); and canned energy drinks of unknown origin labeled with brand names.

Pharmaceutical counterfeiting has attracted most of regulators' attention until recently, he said, but those companies are required to report adverse affects or similar problems, while food companies and other manufacturers are not.

"At MSU, our approach to anti-counterfeiting strategy is extremely interdisciplinary to address the many aspects of the risk," Spink said, including public health communication, supply chain and packaging security. "Overall, we take a holistic, strategic perspective on the human element that led an individual to perceive an opportunity and then act — this perspective is led by criminal justice, social anthropology and basic business economics. Of course other important disciplines are intellectual property rights law, food law, medicine, nursing, public health, international trade, psychology, consumer behavior, retailing, management, economics and business."

MSU's international experience also gives it a valuable perspective by understanding source country economies and cultures, Spink said.

Also participating in the forum were presenters from the FDA and Cargill Inc., representing regulatory and corporate perspectives.

Michelle Flanagan and Jessica Breau will have a table a the craft and flea market on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kings Place, Fredericton, beginning on February 15th, 2009. They will have copies of the CBA’s own Honey of a Cookbook for sale, and a spring-themed basket to raffle off to raise funds for our association. They plan to attend the craft and flea market each Sunday until March 8th, when the winner of the basket draw will be announced.

Michelle and Jessica will also be setting up a beekeeping booth for the 3rd Annual Harvey Outdoor Adventure Show and Sale, to be held at the Harvey Memorial Community Centre on April 25th, 2009. The show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They hope to have live bees (in an observation hive) at the show as part of the large educational display.

Effects of Captan on Apis mellifera Brood Development

A research report published this month in the Journal of Economic Entomology finds that Captan is not harmful to foraging honey bees. The fungicide was first introduced in the early 1950s and still regarded as highly effective against diseases such as fruit rots and leaf blight. It is widely used on a variety of fruit and nut crops, such as apples, field berries, and almonds.

ABSTRACT:
Three almond field trials were conducted during 2003 and 2004 at two locations in central (Fresno County) and northern (Yolo County) California to evaluate the potential effects of commercial applications of Captan on honey bees, Apis mellifera L. Captan was applied at 5.0 kg (AI)/ha during bloom. Hives were evaluated for hive health and brood development parameters for ~2 mo after application. This study showed that the application of Captan was not harmful to foraging honey bees or their brood. No treatment-related effects were noted on hive weights, dead bee deformity, number of dead bees, survival of individual larvae, weight of individual emerging adults, and other hive health parameters.

1. The development of Osmia Lignaria (Blue Orchard Bee) as a practical pollinator of our almond orchards. We currently have 600,000 female bees that we will develop into a population of about 100 million females, and the successful candidate will be responsible for this program, including bee reproduction, health, disease management, parasite management, pollination strategy, bee genetics, and all associated issues.

2. Interfacing with our current suppliers of up to 80,000 colonies of honey bees for almond pollination.  This will include beekeeper selection, inspection, and monitoring to assure optimal colony strength at bloom.

3. Almond pollination research.

While I was away at the American Beekeeping Federation http://abfnet.org meeting in Reno, some freezes came to Gainesville.  Vegetable growers were afraid of losing plants and many had the bed sheets and plastic out to cover their yard plants.  The maples have mostly bloomed here now; the red propeller seeds are falling and spinning in the wind.  It has warmed up considerably in the last week, and also rained fairly heavily prior to the freezes and so the risk of fire has been somewhat abated.  Meanwhile prescribed fires to thin out vegetation in some areas continue.

On the heels of the Federation meeting, the Apiary Inspectors of America and American Association of Professional Apiculturists met in Gainesville.  Presentations at all these events reveal that pesticides appear to be much more of a problem when it comes to bee loss, and a lot of this may be beekeeper inflicted.  Surveys of chemicals in pollen, comb and bees show that the miticides fluvalinate, amitraz and coumaphos are more likely to be found in the honey bee’s environment than others, including neonicotinoids and fungicides, although they too are often found in high levels.  Information is also being gathered about the sublethal effects of these chemicals, especially on brood, but also on longevity of emerged adults exposed to pesticides during larval development.  Finally, there is evidence that pesticides can act synergistically and the unintended co nsequences on bee colonies are significant.  These results suggest that the practices of using hard chemicals to control Varroa must be reexamined.  This is especially true for beekeepers using off-label products.

More information is also coming out that Nosema ceranae and a boatload of viruses are implicated in Colony Collapse Disorder.  Although problems in themselves, they are much worse on honey bees that have been weakened by Varroa infestation.  Some believe that the antibiotic fumagillin, thought previously to be benign and a cure for nosema, is really hard on bees that are already “sick.”  The dosage amount is also a problem; the new nosema may require a different treatment regimen.

Nutrition is also being carefully looked at by scientists.  There’s more evidence that feeding pollen patties is extremely beneficial, especially to colonies going to almonds.  And high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) feeding could be more problematic than previously thought.  Of particular concern is the quantity of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) found in some of the food being used.  Although generally produced by heat reacting on fructose, there is evidence that the HMF content may rise to unacceptable levels simply when water is added to HFCS.

Gleanings from the February 2009 Bee Culture:

The President of Apimondia writes that preparations for Apimondia 2009 are well underway and it’s not too soon to begin preparations for journeying to France. http://www.apimondia2009.com/pages/?all=accueil&idl=22 . Martin Braunstein from Argentina reflects on the history of trade in honey bees and how most of the problems are not reflective of legal trade, but instead illegal importations and ill advised scientific experiments.  William Shepherd, SE Kentucky, complains that Tammy Horn is justifying strip mining by advocating apiforestation.  She replies this is not the case and is only a response to land that has already been strip mined.  Gert Van Eizenga of the Netherlands asks why all the fuzz about Apis cerana in Australia.  It is a gentle bee, a pollinator and cannot hybridize with mellifera.

Editor Flottum discusses Florida’s honey standard initiative and reports that the frenzy is about to start in the California almonds. He concludes that beekeeping has changed more  in the last two years than in the last twenty and provides a list of things successful beekeepers are doing to keep their bees alive.

New books on the shelf include The Honey Revolution, a sequel to The Hibernation Diet, the UK Beekeepers Annual (directory of beekeeping associations and organizations), and The Super-Organism, that “tells the story of social insects with unsurpassed insight and eloquence.”

Clarence Collison takes a closer look at vitellogenin.  This storage protein is responsible for much that goes on in bee biology, including life span and colony survival.  Read how its level in queens varies and what that might mean for reproduction.

Joe Latshaw reflects on his micro instrument for micro breeders, designed for use with the “flexible insemination technique.”  Read how this instrument has been designed to facilitate use by the greater number of beekeepers interesting in stock propagation.

 Jason Nelson compares bees and humans when it comes to consuming and digesting pollen.  Most folks already know who the winner is, but you can read in this article why this is so.

Joe Traynor writes that all pollens are not created equal.  Read why more beekeepers are looking at nutritional conditions of colonies and what can be done about them.  Ominously, he says blueberry, sunflower and corn have low protein levels, and sunflower is the crop that French beekeepers have associated most with CCD.

Scott Debnam and colleagues describe the etiology of Colony Collapse Disorder up to one year prior to collapse.  Read how the symptoms shift over time what are some of the options for those who consider combining affected colonies with those not exhibiting symptoms.

The Science of Bee Culture, Volume 1, No. 1 is published as a supplement to this issue.  It contacts four reviewed articles: a modified two-queen system allowing drone brood removal for Varroa control, a comparison of small hive beetle reproduction in differing soils, effects of Varroa infestation on queen introduction and supersedure, and risks of feeding pollen supplement when small hive beetles are present.  These alone are worth the price of this issue.

 Larry Connon is up to number four on his list of 10 challenges for sideline beekeepers.  Read his observations on colony loss and what beekeepers are doing about it, including using summer increase, locally adapted stock, early mite control, and overwinter feeding.

 Bill Ruzicka provides a history and present status of TheVernon Stock Improvement Project in Canada.  He is the only one left of the original group of breeders still producing this and to his knowledge there has been little introduction of other bee strains.  Read his inventions developed over 30 years in this innovative project.

Ann Harmon asks if it isn’t time to give up the term “hobbyist beekeeper, especially in these times when beekeepers are asking for help from legislatures?”  She asks the readership for ideas on what to replace it with such as small-scale, artisanal, sustainable.

 Grai St. Clair Rice reports on the October 2008 meeting of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign http://www.nappc.org/ and the Pollinator Partnership http://pollinator.org .  Read how tempers flared with reference to pesticides and what the groups will be working on in the future as the “responsibility for the health of pollinators has become political.”

 Ross Conrad reviews American Foulbrood, which he says could be in danger of being overlooked given so much attention on exotic problems and CCD.  Read how he controls foulbrood naturally and what treatments he recommends.

 In all the news that fits, there is a discussion of pesticide reporting by beekeepers.  This is quite low and there is concern that few incidents would make regulators unresponsive to beekeeping concerns.  It is suggested beekeepers followup any losses with pesticides by reporting them to their state regulators with copies to federal governmental offices in the EPA by e-mailing Mastrota.nicholas@epa.gov and Kish.tony@epa.gov

 In the Bottom Board Ed Colby reports good news from the Colorado Beekeepers Association meeting.  Some beekeepers have few problems with bee health it seems in  Colorado.  Read why this is so.
